Visa Requirements


If you have any doubts about obtaining a visa, please contact your local British Embassy or office of the British Council. What follows is general guidance only.

If you live in a European Union country you do not need a visa to study in the UK. If your country is on the visa national list, you must apply for a visa before you come to the UK

Do I need a student visa in order to study English in the UK?

If you have a visitor's visa you can study for short periods but for longer periods you will need to obtain a student visa. At Prospect we can help with the application and will provide you with a letter showing your acceptance on the course.

Can I get a visa on arrival in the UK?

It depends upon your nationality. The Home Office prefers you to obtain your visa before you leave your own country. Check the visa national list and if your country is on it, you must obtain a visa before you leave.

What do I need to do to apply for a visa?

If you are from a country on the visa national list you must go to the British Consulate with the following, otherwise show them to an immigration officer at your point of entry to the UK.

  1. A letter from Prospect outlining your course, the number of hours you intend to study (at least 15 hours per week),  what the course dates are and the fees paid.

  2. You must demonstrate that you have enough money to cover the cost of your course and to support yourself while you are in the UK.

  3. You need to show that you intend to leave the UK once your studies have finished.

Can I extend my stay as a student?

If you have a student visa you can apply to the Home Office to extend your visa. The following information is required.

  1. Your name and address.

  2. The name and address of the school your are attending including confirmation of your attendance at class.

  3. Proof of your financial situation. If you have a bank or building society account then you need to show three months bank statements.

  4. Details of money received from friends or family.

  5. Details of money earned.

  6. Details of any state support you have received.

Do I need to go to the Home Office to apply?

No. You can apply by post. Make sure you send it by registered or recorded delivery and make sure you have photocopies of all documents including your passport. The Home Office address is:-

What can I do Iif I want to travel overseas while the Home Office has my passport?

You can't unless in an emergency you get your passport back and then your application will be withdrawn.
