The Roma of Boznia-Herzegovina – brief history:

The ethnic tension and violence that spread throughout the Bosnia 92-95 war decimated Roma society – many thousands were murdered and many more ethnically cleansed from their homes.  Over twenty years on, a high proportion are still unable to return as their homes have either been occupied, destroyed or there is still a real threat of violence.

It is extremely difficult for the Roma of Bosnia to find employment - in many regions unemployment stands at almost 100%. It is also estimated that 90% of Roma children cannot attend full time education due to poverty, discrimination and lack of official documentation.
Miracles launched the Roma Housing and Education project in response to this crisis and to relieve an immediate Roma housing shortage in the city of Zenica, near Sarajevo. We built six houses alongside a school, a community centre, land for growing crops and green houses. Since the launch in 2009, we have been able to provide secure housing and routes to full time education for more than 50 children and their families.

The project is regarded as one of the most successful of its kind in Bosnia and one of which
Miracles is extremely proud.
