Dunorlan Park, Tunbridge Wells


 

 

Dunorlan is a grade ll park centred on the pleasure grounds designed by Robert Marnock in the late 1850s for a villa on the edge of Tunbridge Wells. ACTA worked with engineers, landscape architects and architects to prepare a successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund and acted as project managers for the detailed design and construction.

detailed restoration proposals and design
period planting design
restoration of the lake
replacement of the cedar avenue
refurbishment of the café
construction of new paths and two new buildings.

The Pulhamite rockwork, cascade and terracotta fountain were repaired and the unique Pulhamite gazebo refurbished. Lost rockwork was found and incorporated in the restored landscape.

The project has won Civic Trust, BALI and Green Flag awards.

The lake was restored and a new boathouse constructed

 
Planting was designed in the style of Robert Marnock and responding to the acid soil conditions.

 
The 1860s cedar avenue had severely decayed and many trees were missing. Following extensive public consultation, broad support was obtained for its clearance and replanting

The terracotta fountain was dismantled’ recast and reassembled


 
A balance between retaining the best of the existing planting and new planting had to be struck
