Hard drives are divided into partitions
Partitions normally contain file systems
- Primary, extended, and logical partitions
- The default filesystem type is ext3
- Multiple partitions may be assembled into a larger virtual partition: software RAID and LVM
Filesystems are accessed via a mount point, which is a designated directory in the file system hierarchy.
