  • hostname - display or set the system's name

    • Is initially set by rc.sysinit from $HOSTNAME variable
    • /etc/sysconfig/network

  • /etc/hosts - local database of hostname to IP address mappings

    • Checked before DNS
    • Useful for small isolated networks
