Ten-seventy-one for alto sax and piano was inspired by a visit to the iconic Guggenheim Museum in New York City, constructed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
The music comprises of a graceful promenade, a groovy interruption in the form of a dysfunctional, disruptive set of blues variations in 5/8 and the descent propelling the music, helter-skelter, to the exit.
The full gamut of the art gallery experience is reflected in this new beautiful, bright and exciting piece. |

This jazzy solo has a gentle lilt combined with a slight restless feel brought about by some fairly sideways harmonic shifts. The main theme is marked bitter sweet and the wide intervals in the melody help achieve this. A florid improvised-like section follows the statement of the main theme and then after that there are two opportunities for the soloist to improvise in earnest. One is a pseudo middle-eight oscillating between two chords and the other is at the end of the piece where, during the recap of the introduction the Alto can briefly reflect on all the has gone before. This piece is on the Trinity College London Jazz Saxophone Syllabus at Grade 6 |
