You will have a BSc in biomedical science or equivalent and you will have
gained extensive experience in one of the key disciplines such as
Haematology or Biochemistry. UK scientists can gain higher rates of pay
by becoming state registered with the Council For Professions
Supplementary to Medicines (CPSM). State registration is open to anyone
that has worked as a trainee in an accredited NHS laboratory for a
designated period and sat an oral examination.
Biomedical scientists from abroad do not require CPSM registration to find
work in the UK. In fact, non-state registered scientists from abroad currently
fill 60% of UK MLSO posts. What is crucial is experience. Locums fresh from
their BSc studies will take up posts as Medical Laboratory Assistants.
