Announcing Sub Screen Sonic : an Exhibition of International Gig Postser Art

May 12th - 29th 2006 The Basment, Argus Lofts, Kensington St, Brighton

Inspired by a visit to SXSW, Austin, Texas and its gig poster expo Flatstock - Brighton Fringe Arts Production has brought together over 25 national and international artists to transform their edgy and raw venue The Basement into a visual feast of contemporary screen printed, letter-pressed and lithographed gig posters.

Never content to stay within the bounds of exhibition – SubScreenSonic is a collection of events designed to encourage artists, the public and the music industry alike to reignite the passion that existed in the 60s and 70s for gig posters and kick start the UK scene here and now.

SubScreenSonic is:

•  EXHIBITION - featuring the finest contemporary screen printed and letter-pressed international gig poster art

•  MASTERCLASS - for professional artists – Delivered by Chuck Sperry, of San Francisco's Firehouse

•  DEBATE - a Panel Discussion by experts in the field from both the US and UK – How can the UK embrace this dynamic art form?

•  PUBLIC ACCESS WORKSHOPS – A chance to add the finishing touches to your own poster with a professional gig poster artist in The Basement!

•  OPEN STUDIOS – See the best in Contemporary British Print Workshops at BDI Screen printing www.bdiscreenprinting.com and BIP www.brightonprintmaking.com.uk as they open their doors to the public.

•  POSTER HUNT – The public will have the chance to acquire their very own piece of original gig poster art – if they can find it.

A selection of exhibiting artists include:

•  Chuck Sperry -of The Firehouse Kustom Rock Co, San Francisco with his partner Ron Donovan are fine craftsmen of subversive propaganda and have stuffed their rock art portfolios for over twenty years with many of the biggest names in rock and roll. www.firehouseposters.com

•  Eleanor Grosch – of Pushmepullyou Design, Philadelphia, US whose designs pair striking simplicity with bold and contrasting colours www.pushmepullyoudesign.com

•  Malleus Rock Art Lab –Italian professional art lab producing as part of their repertoire, seventies inspired rock posters www.malleusdelic.com

•  Tara McPherson – New York based poster artist “ creating art about people and their odd ways, her characters seem to exude an idealized innocence with a glimpse of hard earned wisdom in their eyes ” www.taramcpherson.com

•  Jay Vollmar – US based artist whose eclectic retro inspired artwork has been used to promote countless bands and venues www.jayvollmar.com
