Do you have a clear idea on what your marketing campaign is trying to achieve? A message aiming to attract new business will be different from a message aims to raise your profile with existing customers. A targeted sales shot should be short, measureable and to the point. Careful targeting can ensure that your marketing delivers the right content to the right people at the right time. By tailoring the content of your messages to different customer groups, you will significantly increase your chances of success.  People pay more attention to messages that strike a chord – so if you've just won a big contract in your local area, focus on the location of your business and send your message to local companies.

 
 
 
Your prospect has received your hard-hitting marketing message and has been bowled over by your persuasive pitch. But what should he do next? Don’t forget to spell it out to him by including a clear call to action with every campaign. This could be a link to download discount vouchers or to accept an invitation to attend your event.

 
 
 
When sending email marketing campaigns, make sure you include links to your website so that recipients can click straight through to find out more about your products and service offerings. By monitoring these click-throughs you will be able to measure the success of each campaign and identify the subjects of greatest interest to your customers and prospects.

 
 
 
We all like something for nothing but think carefully before using the word ‘free’ in your marketing campaigns. It can cause your emails to become caught in spam filters, but more importantly it can lead to your marketing being in breach of the CAP Code.

Under the CAP Code clause 32.3, ‘Promoters should not describe an individual element of a package as ‘free’ if the cost of that element is included in the package price’.

Also under the CAP code, you may not promote a special offer as ‘free’ if the customer has to buy something in order to be given the free item. For example, a mobile phone operator cannot claim that their customers are given a ‘free’ handset if they have to buy the airtime with it.

As a rule, using the word ‘inclusive’ is much safer than using the word ‘free’ when describing a package deal.

 
 
 
For email campaigns, make sure your design works! An HTML design will make your email look more professional, but if you don’t get it right, it will fail to render correctly across all inboxes or will get caught in spam filters. Believe it or not, the main obstacle you will face is getting your email into your prospect’s inbox! ISPs delete billions of emails every day and spam filters are always keeping a watchful eye. So talk to us about sending email campaigns via UK-based mail servers which are ISP approved and compliant with the latest European Spam laws.

 
 
 
Measurement is the key to long-term marketing success. Email campaigns allow you to track how many emails were opened, and which links customers clicked on, which enables you to fine-tune your future campaigns. Another tactic is to use non-geographic numbers such as 0845 to track the telephone responses to your campaigns.

 
 
 
The subject line has a major influence on whether recipients open and read emails. Keep it short and avoid using CAPS, exclamation marks or words like ‘free’. Find out what works. Consider doing some split testing, by sending slight variations on your email to different customer groups. For example, find out what happens if you change the sender’s name from male to female, or use a different subject header, or send the same email at different times.
