Our Projects

The Our Newhaven Project

Our Newhaven is a new website project that encourages you to remember, record and become a part of a living history of the town.  What goes onto the website is up to you!  Memories and photos can be of yesterday or from years ago.  A team of local volunteer editors are helping to creating and develop this exciting project.  Our Newhaven: Dramatised Memories is an intergenerational drama project using local life stories of living in the town from 1910s to 1990s, the project will culminate in a public performance at the Our Newhaven: Living Archive & Dramatised Memories event being held at Newhaven Fort on Friday 21st March 2008.

The Our Newhaven Project is a NSN partnership project led by South Downs Council for Voluntary Service with Tideway School, Newhaven Town Council, Newhaven Historical Society, Newhaven Fort, Newhaven Community Development Association, Newhaven Chamber of Commerce and WRVS Heritage Plus. The website project is supported by ESCC Global Grants programme, the dramatised memories project is supported by Awards for All.

Town Centre and Local Transport Improvements
East Sussex County Council in partnership with Newhaven Town Council, Lewes District Council and Newhaven Strategic Network has completed a Local Area Transport Strategy for Newhaven. This sets out a framework for future transport investment in the town for the next ten years.

So far a major town centre improvement scheme has taken place. The whole of the town centre has been landscaped, a new area has been created for market traders and a footbridge regarded as an eyesore has been removed. This has made the High Street a much more attractive place. There are also plans to develop a public art project to brighten up the town centre and other sites around Newhaven, including Denton Island and the Ferry terminal.

Future planned work includes improvements to the ring road junctions with Brighton Road and Lewes Road and improvements to Newhaven Town Station to include drop off, parking and other facilities.

Open Spaces

Newhaven Strategic Network has developed an Open Spaces Strategy for Newhaven which aims to retain and improve Newhaven's green and open areas. This will be done through better site management and improving facilities such as signage, access, toilets and litterbins.

The Castle Hill Nature Reserve Group has made major improvements to its site over the past few years. NSN is currently looking to gain funding so that this success can be extended by employing an Open Spaces Development Worker who could establish similar management groups for other sites with the aim of establishing an Open Spaces Trust for the whole of Newhaven.

Improving Services for Older People
Newhaven Strategic Network has developed a statistical report about older people in Newhaven. Because Newhaven has a younger population than the surrounding areas, the needs of older people may not always have been fully explored and understood before. The report studies issues such as age, health, housing and access to services and benefits.

Key findings show that older people in Newhaven:

  • Are on a lower average income than the rest of the South East.
  • Get sick at a younger age and become dependant on care earlier.
  • Have less access to some amenities such as central heating and transport.

After consultation with local people, Newhaven Strategic Network is planning to work with social services, housing and other agencies to improve services for older people.

European Funding
The Franco-British Interreg IIIA Programme is part of a European Community initiative to develop co-operation between border countries of the European Union.

An application by Newhaven Port & Properties and ferry owners Transmanche for nearly £154,000 worth of Interreg Programme funding was agreed in July 2005.
Newhaven Strategic Network and East Sussex County Council worked with Newhaven Port & Properties and Transmanche to secure the funding. This will form part of a £650,000 improvement programme at the port designed to secure the future of the Port of Newhaven.

It clears the way for essential upgrading work to be carried out at the port ahead of the arrival in 2006 of two new ferries currently being built in Spain. A further Interreg bid for just over £90,000 to develop the economic and tourism product of the "Normandy Sussex" Area was agreed in October 2005. The project is being led by East Sussex County Council and the Dieppe Chamber of Commerce.
