Blair to take center stage

The Prime Minister is to give his strongest message yet about the urgency of the millennium computer bug.

Mr Blair will be the main speaker at a conference for small and medium sized companies being organised by Midland Bank.

He is expected to warn delegates that they risk losing their business - and possibly their livelihoods - if they do not resolve the bug issues in their computerised systems before the deadline.

With little more than 1,000 days to go until the millennium, the task of getting the computer bug fixed grows ever more urgent, as those doing the job must allow plenty of time - up to a year for large organisations - to test their fixes for errors.

"The UK business community must be left in no doubt about the seriousness of this problem. It is one which they can do something about if they act now," said Mr Blair in a statement.

"This conference sets an example others should follow. The support of large organisations such as Midland Bank is crucial to encourage small and medium sized businesses to address their Year 2000 issues," he added.

Last week, Don Cruickshank, chairman of Government campaign body Action 2000, revealed that he was looking for extra funds of up to 10 times the amount presently budgeted for his organisation - £1 million per year.

Small and medium sized businesses were his main priority, he said, because larger companies were on the whole already aware and taking action.
