Public art photos
Public art has been commissioned and put in place for
thousands of years, with a view to educate, record,
commemorate or to promote an idea. In the past
few years it has also been used to engage or surprise
the viewer and for this reason it has a value rather
different to that of sculpture, although there is
significant overlap between the two
In the Praca do Comercio (Commerce Square) in Lisbon, Portugal,
the centrepiece is a statue of King Jose I, by Machado de Castro in
1775. The square came about following a catastrophic earthquake
in Lisbon in 1755 which, with an associated tsunami, destroyed
the palace that then stood on the site
