Public art photos
Public art has been commissioned and put in place for
thousands of years, with a view to educate, record,
commemorate or to promote an idea. In the past
few years it has also been used to engage or surprise
the viewer and for this reason it has a value rather
different to that of sculpture, although there is
significant overlap between the two
St Pancras Station was saved from demolition largely through
the efforts of Sir John Betjeman. The glorious sculpture to his
memory, by Martin Jennings, that gazes in awe at the roof
surrounded by lines from his poetry is hugely relevant to the
history of the station
